Beneath Tenby's imposing old stone wall lies the Gunfort Gardens – today a quiet, terraced public park overlooking the sea. But this picturesque piece of green has a strategic past.
This site was once home to a small cannon fort, built as part of Tenby's coastal defence system. The location was not chosen by chance: the beach directly under the cliffs was seen as a potential weak point in the defense. The relatively flat entrance to the land would have made it easy for enemy ships to land here. Once landed, invaders were able to scale the cliffs and launch a direct attack on Tenby.
The presence of the fort was supposed to discourage exactly that scenario. With a few strategically placed guns, defenders could fire at any ship that came too close to the shore.
Today, the Gunfort Gardens not only offer a beautiful view of Tenby Bay, but also a silent reminder of the military past of this idyllic place.
