The Ethnological War Museum Argirakio was founded by Michael Argyrakis and has been operating since 1994 as a tribute to his parents, Ioannis and Kalliopi, who were martyrs in the fight for the freedom of the country during the Second World War. His father was executed by the Germans in 1942 in the prison of Agia, Chania. His mother was tortured and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. While the Germans were torturing his mother, a German soldier removed Michalis' eye in front of his mother to force her to confess.
The Argirakio Ethnological War Museum houses collections of objects related to the Second World War, the Battle of Crete, the occupation, the resistance and the modern history of the place. It has a total of 25 display cases containing items such as a radio, grenades, maps, documents from German archives, newspapers from 1940, German and English uniforms, photographs, etc. The collection also includes the battle dress and rifle of Captain Tsatsadakis, one of the kidnappers of German General Heinrich Kreipe. In addition, there are soldiers' passports, identity cards and documents listing prisoners and those executed.
