This monument in the shape of a menhir commemorates the workers who died during the Allied bombing on 22 October 1942. Lorient was a frequent target of Allied bombing due to the presence of U-boat bunkers. During the bombing by American B-17s on 2 October, approximately 160 people were killed and approximately 138 were injured. Among the dead and injured were many foreign (forced) labourers. The city was largely destroyed, but the bunkers remained virtually undamaged.
