Memorial to those who died in action during the liberation of Nispen

This Corten steel monument, unveiled in 2024, commemorates the soldiers who died during the liberation of Nispen on 26 October 1944.

The text on the monument reads:

'LEST WE FORGET'
IN MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO DIED
DURING THE LIBERATION
OF NISPEN
OCTOBER 1944'.

The butterflies on the memorial symbolise the freedom that was fought for. Nispen was liberated by two regiments of the 49th British Infantry Division (“Polar Bear Division”), namely the Duke of Wellington Regiment and the Leicestershire Regiment. This liberation was part of Operation Thruster.
