Information board detailing the history of the Next of Kin Memorial Plaque, often called the 'Dead Man's Penny' or 'Widow's Penny'. The 4 1/2 inch bronze plaques were issued to the next of kin of all British Empire service personnel who had died during WW1. They were issued with a scroll and a King's message in 1919 and 1920.
Some of these Dead Man's Pennies were produced at the Royal Arsenal Woolwich. 1,355,000 plaques were issued, made out of 450 tons of bronze.
