Stumbling Stones Sophienstrasse 16

These brass plaques (Stolpersteine or stumbling stones), placed on October 25, 2016, commemorate:
* ELSE WEISS (born Herz 1877, arrested in 1938, imprisoned in Bruchsal, in 1941 in Altersheim Mannheim, deported in 1942 to Theresienstadt, murdered in Auschwitz in 1944)
* IDA MAYER (born 1879, deported in 1940 to Gurs, interned in Drancy, murdered in Auschwitz in 1942)
* EMMA MAYER (born 1881, deported in 1940 to Gurs, interned in Récébédou, died February 21, 1942)

These Stolpersteine lie here for Jewish war victims, persecuted, deported and murdered in World War II.

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of the last voluntary residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the victim’s, date of birth, and fate. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”
