"The Grand
In memory of those injured and who lost their lives
on 12th October 1984
during the Conservative Party Conference
unveiled
by
The Rt Hon Lord Tebbit CH
12th October 2009"
The Irish Republican Army decided to assassinate British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher because of her stance against prisoners on hunger strike in 1981, of whom 10 died. Patrick Magee managed to plant a time delayed bomb in the hotel more than three weeks before the 1984 Conservative Party Conference. The bomb exploded at 2,54 on 12th October 1984, the force of the blast going upwards which dislodged a chimney stack which collapsed into the hotel. 5 people were killed and more than 30 injured. The Prime Minister survived and opened the Conference on time the next day.
