Train Station Alkmaar

Alkmaar station opened in the 19th century as part of the state line K between Den Helder and Amsterdam. The building, designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode, is a Type SS third-class railway line and was subsequently renovated several times, acquiring its current asymmetrical shape and glass facade.

The railway line to Amsterdam was electrified in 1931, followed by Den Helder in 1958 and Hoorn in 1974. Trams to Haarlem, Het Schouw, Egmond, Bergen, and Schagen ran until the mid-20th century, after which passenger services ceased, and freight services ended in 1968.

During World War II, the former underpass between the platforms served as an air raid shelter. Alkmaar was an important transport hub for the German occupying forces. The station already had a marshalling yard. During the war, the station was guarded by anti-aircraft guns mounted on railway wagons.
