These brass plaques (Stolpersteine or Stumbling Stones) commemorate:
* HERZ STERN (born 1868, fled to his death, 24 January 1943, Winterswijk)
* KAROLINA STERN-HONI (born 1859, deported 27 April 1943 from Westerbork, murdered 30 April 1943, Sobibor)
* BERTHA SIMONS-CAHN (born 1871, deported 24 November 1942 from Westerbork, murdered 27 November 1942 Auschwitz)
These Stolpersteine are here for Jewish war victims, persecuted, deported and murdered in World War II.
‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the former residence of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the name of the victim, their date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives each victim an individual memorial. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten.’
