Stumbling Stones Meddosestraat 7

These brass plaques (Stolpersteine or Stumbling Stones) commemorate:

* BERTHA POPPERS-DE WOLFF (born 1861, interned 9 April 1943 in Vught, deported 11 May 1943 from Westerbork, murdered 14 May 1943 in Sobibor)
* BETTI POPPERS (born 1900, interned 9 April 1943 in Vught, deported 6 July 1943 from Westerbork, murdered 9 July 1943 in Sobibor)

These Stolpersteine are here for Jewish war victims who were persecuted, deported and murdered in World War II.

‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (Stumbling Stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the former residence of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the name of the victim, their date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives each victim an individual memorial. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten.’
