Lager Weinsberg, built in 1937 served as a Landwehr training camp until 1939. From 1940 to 1945 used as prisoner of war camp for Allied officers and NCO's. The camp was expanded with guard towers and facilities fitted to house prisoners. The camp was evacuated by the Wehrmacht on 30 March 1945. After the Second World War, the camp housed displaced persons before being used as transit camp for refugees and ethnic German repatriates until its close in 1972 At its peek, the camp housed 70.000 residents. After its closure, all but one camp buildings were demolished and a residential area was built over it. The only surviving camp building houses a small permanent exhibition with objects and photographs.
