Hanssin-Jukka Hangar Tuulos

The Douglas DC2 “Hanssin Jukka” is on display in this museum hangar. This DC2 was put into service by KLM in 1935 and flew more than 5,000 hours for KLM under the name “Haan” until it was sold to Finland in 1937.

The aircraft was converted into a bomber for the Finnish Air Force and equipped with two machine guns. It was then renamed Hanssin Jukka. During the Winter War of 1940, it bombed the Russian air base at Suojärv, losing one engine. By the time it was repaired three weeks later, the Winter War was already over.

Later in World War II (the Continuation War), in which Finland sided with Germany, it was used for flights to Germany and the evacuation of wounded soldiers, among other things. After the war, the Hanssin Jukka remained in service for another 10 years before making its last flight in 1955. Plans to scrap it were abandoned after it was sold and converted into a café. In 1983, it was taken over by the Finnish Aviation Museum and, in 2010-2011, after a thorough restoration, the Hanssin Jukka can now be seen in all its glory in the hangar named after it.

In addition to the Hanssin Jukka, the hangar also houses models of other aircraft, and outside there are several aged aircraft from the Finnish Air Force on display, such as a MIG21, a Mil MI8 and a Saab Dragen.
