Memorial Saboteur's Trail Tinn

During the night of 27/28 February 1943, Norwegian commandos destroyed the heavy water factory at Vemork. The Nazis considered the heavy water (deuterium oxide) produced here essential for the manufacture of a nuclear weapon. After an earlier attempt by British commandos had failed, the Norwegians succeeded in destroying the production vats and the supply of heavy water. Production was then halted for several months and in November 1943, after it had been restored, the factory was bombed by the American Air Force. The Germans then decided to move production to Germany.

The Saboteurs' Trail has been marked out along the route taken by the commandos between Rjukan Fjellstue and Vemork. This memorial along the return route commemorates this significant event in history.

A plaque has been placed on the rock with the following text:

“Here, early in the morning of 28 February 1943, the saboteurs passed on their way to Hardangervidda, after successfully destroying the heavy water factory at Vemork”
with the names of the nine Norwegians.
