Remains German Hospital Skoganvarre

From 1941 to 1944, fierce fighting took place between German and Russian troops in the Arctic border region of Norway, Finland and the Soviet Union. Initially, these were German offensives towards Murmansk, but in October 1944, the Soviet Union launched Operation Pechenga-Kirkenes, driving the Germans out of northern Finland and Norway.

In order to care for the wounded from these battles (also known as the Litsa Front), a German field hospital was built here in Skoganvarre, Norway, which was still occupied at the time. In May 1943, the hospital was put into use and wounded soldiers were cared for here.

When the German troops withdrew in December 1944, the hospital was destroyed. The remains of the foundations and all kinds of rusted material can still be seen at the site where the hospital stood. There are also information boards explaining the history of that time.
