Defence Channel Evertsoord

This canal, also known as the Peel Canal, was dug in 1939 as an anti-tank ditch and part of the Peel-Raamstelling. This defence line was intended to stop enemy troops in the event of a German attack or to delay them long enough for Allied troops to reinforce the Dutch forces.

The canal ran roughly between Griendtsveen and Mill and is still largely intact. Here and there, you can still see remnants of Dutch type B and S casemates. In addition to its military value, the canal also served a drainage function during the reclamation of De Peel. During the German invasion in May 1940, fierce fighting took place in some places along the canal.
