Memorial German Prisoners of War Dorchester

Here rest German warriors in foreign soil yet unforgotten.

This is a rare example of a memorial to German Prisoners of War who died in captivity during WW1. It was designed by K. Bartholmay of Elberfeld and sculpted by Josef Walter of Ausburg, both Prisoners of War and unveiled on 27 October 1919. It commemorates 45 German serviceman who died, all but 13 from the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918/19, who were originally buried in St Georges Churchyard but were moved to the Cannock Chase German Cemetery in the 1960's.
Dorchester was the site of Prisoner of War Camp holding upto 4,500 men.
