Stelling van Amsterdam - Military Drinking Water Supply

The Military Drinking Water Supply at Sloten supplied Amsterdam and surrounding municipalities with drinking water during a siege. Around 1900, wells were dug along the Ringvaart canal and Sloterweg, connected to a pumping station with a water treatment plant. The water was piped into the city.

During the German occupation, the plant was tested and repaired, but never used. After the war, some buildings remained usable, although the technology was destroyed. During the Cold War, the site served as storage for defense equipment.

Today, most of the wells have disappeared under roads and sports fields. The pumping station is used by air traffic control; the water treatment buildings have been squatted since 1989. Part of the complex is a listed building.
