Memorial Perished Horses Heurteauville

This memorial stone, which was placed by the French association Historique Vivante de la Cavalerie Allemande, commemorates the many horses that perished during the German retreat across the Seine at the end of August 1944.

The text on the stone reads:
'A la memoire des Chevaux reposant en sette terre, tues lors de la retraite Allemande fin aout 1944.
En hommage a leur sacrifice, aux cotes des combattants'

(In memory of the horses resting in this land, killed during the German retreat at the end of August 1944.
In tribute to their sacrifice, alongside the combatants)

After the retreat, the carcasses of the dead horses were buried by the Allies in trenches dug by bulldozers in the fields near the crossing point. During their search, the local association found many remains of horses and German equipment. A number of French re-enactors and German vehicles were present for the inauguration of the memorial in August 2025. The stone stands opposite the car park at the ferry crossing.
