Gazimestan is a memorial site and monument commemorating the Battle of Kosovo (1389), located approximately 6 km from the actual battlefield, known as the Kosovo Field or Merel Field. Prince Lazar led the Serbian army during this Battle of Kosovo.
The commemorations of the Battle of Kosovo in Gazimestan became more prominent and important after the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes in 1919. After 1924, a memorial park was built.
In 1989, on the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, Serbian President Slobodan Milošević gave the famous and controversial Gazimestan speech, which is seen as the starting point of the breakup of Yugoslavia.
