Memorial Józef Piłsudski Augustov

This monument, featuring his bust, commemorates Polish Marshal Józef Piłsudski. During the early years of the First World War, Piłsudski fought with Polish units within the Habsburg army against the Russian army, which was seen as the greatest opponent of a potentially free Poland. Early in the war, he indicated that he did not want to fight against England or France because he saw these countries as allies in the struggle for an independent Polish state. For this reason, he resigned as commander in 1916 and was subsequently interned by the Germans in 1917. After the war, he declared Poland independent and became its first president.

The inscription on the monument reads:
“Żołnierze nie spijcie bo Polske prezespicie” (Soldiers, stay awake, or you will ruin Poland)
