This monument, in the form of a park filled with crosses and memorials, commemorates the victims of Russian terror against the former Polish resistance in the period 1944-1956. During the advance of the Red Army, the Internal Polish Army (AK) offered assistance to the Russians in their fight against the Germans. However, from July 1945 onwards, the Russian NKVD and other units began arresting “anti-communist elements” within the ranks of this former resistance. During a raid that went down in history as the “Augustow Raid”, more than 7,000 people were arrested that month, many of whom disappeared without trace.
One of the monuments in the park is dedicated to a broader group. Those who sacrificed their limbs and their blood and lives for their country:
Victims of the uprisings of 1830 and 1863
Soldiers of the POW (Polish Military Organisation) 1918-1921
The defenders of the Fatherland 1939
The victims who died in concentration camps and were executed during the Second World War and the communist terror between 1939 and 1956.
