Aalsmeer Airport (SF 16) was constructed shortly after May 1940 as a decoy for Schiphol Air Base. The dummy airfield consisted of lighting, simulators, anti-aircraft guns, searchlights, bunkers, and an 800-meter-long railway track on which a dummy aircraft was automatically towed.
Between August 1940 and March 1942, approximately 230 British bombs and 11 incendiary bomb groups were dropped on the site. The bunkers were later blown up and buried. In 2016–2017, 30 bombs were cleared, including four heavy bombs.
