Memorial Birkendorf

The "Wellingtonia" is a giant sequoia in the center of Birkendorf, opposite the Edeka Fechtig supermarket.
The sequoia was planted in 1871 to commemorate the end of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). It was a sign of gratitude for the 22 soldiers who returned to their village after the war. Their names are listed on a memorial plaque.

The tree, 26.5 meters tall and 1.85 meters in circumference, towers above the houses. It is now a defining feature of Birkendorf's cityscape.
