The Slingerbos is a fortification dating from the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648), located on the northeast side of the town. It was constructed in the late 16th century, probably around 1585–1590, when Zeeland systematically fortified its coastal towns against Spanish attacks. In the 17th century, the ramparts and bastions were further improved according to the principles of fortification (trace italienne). The bastion was bombed by the Allies during World War II.
