Memorial 90th and 97th US Infantry Division Flossenburg

These monuments honour the American 90th and 97th Infantry Divisions, who liberated KZ Flossenburg.

The camp was liberated by American troops on 23 April 1945. There is some controversy as to which unit was actually responsible for liberating the camp, but it is certain that units from both divisions were present in and around the camp on and around 23 April.

The SS had already evacuated the camp in mid-April, during which thousands of prisoners lost their lives during the subsequent forced marches.

At the time of liberation, the Americans found only about 1,500 prisoners remaining.
