Memorial Dietrich Bonhoeffer Flossenburg

This plaque commemorates the German theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was executed in Flossenburg on 9 April 1945, together with six fellow prisoners.

Bonhoeffer criticised the Nazi regime from the outset. He became involved in the “Bekennende Kirche” (Confessing Church), which refused to submit to the National Socialists. There he trained ministers and developed international contacts.

After the outbreak of war in 1939, he joined the military resistance. In 1943, he was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death. After spending time in various prisons and concentration camps, he was hanged in Flossenburg on 9 April 1945.
