At varying times during World War One, Bostall Heath was the site of a Belgian refugee, an Australian convalescence hospital and a training camp for soldiers deploying to the Western Front.
During WW2 a 4 gun Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery, known as ZS4, from 54th Royal Artillery Regiment armed with 4.5 guns was established in 1940.
No physical trace exists of the gun battery but the outlines of the camp show up as marks in grass in aerial photos.
