From 1937 General Franco appointed Jacobo Fitz‑James Stuart y Falcó, the 17th Duke of Alba, as Spain’s representative in London. After March 1939 he became full ambassador, replacing the Republican envoy. The embassy under his leadership was a delicate post: Spain was officially neutral but leaned toward the Axis in the early years, while Britain worked hard to keep Franco from entering the war. The Duke of Alba protested the British commando raid on the port of Santa Isabel and maintained close contact with Anthony Eden, Foreign Secretary.
