During the Second World War, Hastings airstrip near Freetown was the site of two recorded air accidents: a Royal Air Force Douglas DC-2-120 on 7 September 1941, and a USAAF Douglas C-49H (DC-3-228) on 19 April 1942. The airfield likely served as the landing point for two SOE agents in 1941, who joined the Maid Honor Force in preparation for Operation Postmaster, launched in January 1942.
