Monument to Members of the Resistance.

The monument bears the inscription: "Tribute from the city of Hersin-Coupigny to its F.T.P.F. martyrs who died for France." F.T.P.F. stands for Francs Tireurs et Partisans Français.

One of these Resistance fighters was Jean Spanneut, 20 years old. He was seriously injured during an escape attempt on 15th June 1944, when the German occupiers raided the towns of Hersin-Coupigny and Noeux-les-Mines, arresting 15 members of the FTPF. He died on 17th June 1944, from these injuries.
