This monument was erected in 1945 to commemorate the five American crew members of the B24 Liberator, who died in their aircraft crash at this location due to low altitude. One crew member was seriously injured and taken prisoner of war. Two crew members managed to escape. The objective of their mission was Operation Lackey 3A, in support of resistance fighters.
The Liberator B28 was part of the 8th Air Force and stationed in Harrington, England.
