Kennedybridge by Fürstenberg

Railway bridge over the Weser River near Fürstenberg, part of the Holzminden - Scherfede railway line.

In October 1944, an arch on the south side was destroyed during a bombing raid. A temporary bridge was built. The bridge was blown up by retreating German troops on April 7, 1945.

After the war, restoration began in November 1945. The bombed arch on the south side (left in the photo) was reconstructed in concrete. A truss bridge was built across the river.

The project was overseen by Captain James Latimer Kennedy, who died on June 17, 1946, near Düren when a mine exploded. A memorial stone beneath the first northern arch commemorates him. The first track was opened on July 9, 1946, followed by the second track on September 4, 1946.

Kennedy is buried in de cemetery in Cologne.
