Stele from the tomb of Captain Anton von Jaeger

Existing grave marker in Goersdorf belonging to a German soldier involved in the Battle of Woerth-Froeschwiller.
The back of the stele was partially destroyed by a grenade impact.

Anton von Jäger, Royal Captain of the Bavarian Regiment 1st Class in the 11th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment,
born 1 March 1824 in Munich and killed on 6 August 1870 at the Battle of Woerth.

The grave was located inside a wooden enclosure of a mass grave that has now disappeared. According to an old postcard, it contained 132 soldiers. According to a plan by the French Remembrance Service, 36 French and 60 Germans were buried there, including soldier Xaver Syroth. A wooden cross, now missing, was located in the right-hand section of the enclosure of the mass grave.
