Muwaffaq Salti Air Base

The plains around Azraq were used as a landing strip for aircraft while T.E. Lawrence was based in the castle at Azraq in 1917-18. In 1976 the Royal Jordanian Airforce began to build a major airbase named after Lieutenant Muwaffaq Salti who died in battle against the Israelis in 1966 at the Battle of Samu.
The RJAF have operated F5A/B Freedom Fighters, F-5E Tiger II, Mirages and F16 Fighting Falcons from the airfield. In 2014 the Belgian Air Force also operated F-16s on Operation Desert Falcon.
In 2019 the US began an expansion of the airbase, improving and modernising the facilities enabling MQ-9 Reaper operations.
