War memorial Brakel

This monument stands in the city cemetery of Brakel and was inaugurated in 1954.

It commemorates the expelled population from East Germany at the end of World War II and in the post-war period.

Several German regions and cities were annexed in 1945/1946 by countries including the Soviet Union, Poland, and Czechoslovakia
The inscriptions on the outer stelae read:
„Useren Toten und Vermißten“ – „Der Ostdeutschen Heimat“ (Our Dead and Missing – From the East German Homeland).

This circular monument comprises a Latin cross surrounded by 10 pylons bearing the coats of arms of the regions or cities. These are: Baltikum "In Treue fest" (In Faithful Solid) - Wartheland - Danzig - West Prussia - Upper Silesia - Lower Silesia - Pomerania - East Brandenburg - Sudetenland - East Prussia - "Fern doch treu" (Far but Fidelity).
