This brass plaque (Stolperstein or stumbling stone), placed on 3 November 2025, commemorates:
* HELENA THEODARA KUIPERS-RIETBERG (born 1893, resistance fighter, deported from Vught in 1944, murdered on 27-12-1944 in Ravensbrück)
This Stolperstein is laid here for a resistance fighter who was deported and murdered during the Second World War.
‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the former residences of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the name of the victim, their date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig provides an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten.’
Helena Theodora Kuipers-Rietberg “Aunt Riek” was a prominent member of the Resistance during the Second World War. She became involved in resistance activities soon after the German invasion and was one of the co-founders of the LO, the National Organisation for Aid to People in Hiding. On 19 August 1944, she was arrested in Bennekom and transferred to Camp Vught. When Vught was evacuated on 7 September of that year, she was transported to Ravensbrück, where she died on 27 December 1944.
