Memorial stone for French Mausoleum

The memorial stone, erected and dedicated in 1996, replaces the 1875 monument, which was destroyed by the German occupiers in 1941. A black marble plaque on the pedestal commemorates this destruction by the Nazis. A pit containing the bones of the French soldiers who died on the battlefield in 1870 is said to still exist beneath the monument. Inscription on the front: "On this site, a monument to the French army was erected in 1875 by the D.E. De Dietrich Foundation, which was completely destroyed by the occupying forces in 1941." Inscription on the back: "This modest memorial was unveiled in 1996 by Le Souvenir Francais with the participation of the municipalities of Froeschwiller and Woerth, and the Dietrich Society."
