Internment Camp Campagna - Casale San Bartolomeo (Museum)

This camp was started in 1940 by the Italian Fascists, mainly for Jews but also other foreigners. The first group internees were 430 male Jews who fled from Germany, Austria, Poland and other countries. Later on, the number of internees varied between 150 and 230.

The inmates had many freedoms and were treated well. They were also protected from deportation, despite the German demands.

In September 1943, Italy capitulated and the Germans invaded the country. When they reached the camp, all inmates have escaped into the mountains, with the help of local people.

Today, the camp is a museum.
