Commonwealth War Graves Maldegem

Maldegem's cemetery contains five Commonwealth war graves.
These are the graves of:
Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Stanley George Coleman,1266568, age 21
Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Jack Grindley,1219229, age 20
Sergeant (Air Gnr.) Edward John Sayer,1323042, age 22
Sergeant (Nav./Bomber) Harald John Webb,1314838, age 21
They died on June 10, 1943.
The fifth grave is the grave of:
Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) Harold Crosbie Knight, 80270. The South African Knight was in Typhoon MN152 shot down by German Flak anti aircraft guns on May 21, 1944.

Behind this row of Commonwealth graves is a memorial to these fallen airmen. Frank Raeman, in collaboration with the local Maldegem artist Willy Steijaert, had this monument made by the latter. With this monument he wants to permanently commemorate the memory of the allied pilots who are or were buried in the cemetery in Maldegem or who lost their lives on Maldegem territory.

Coleman, Grindley, Sayer and Webb were killed when their Mitchell crashed at Maldegem in 1943; Knight was killed when his Typhoon crashed at Aartrijke in 1944. He was salvaged and transferred to Maldegem; MacFarlane was killed when his P-47 crashed at Maldegem-Donk in 1943; George Reid was killed when his Spitfire crashed at Maldegem in 1944.
