At the Municipal Cemetery in Buurmalsen is one Commonwealth War Grave.
This is the grave of:
Sergeant (Obs.) Penry Llewelyn Thomas, 10/05/1940, 563934, age 27
On 10 May 1940 at 15:30, the Bristol Blenheim L9245 took off from Rosières-en-Santerre air base in France for a reconnaissance flight. The aircraft was shot down over the Netherlands by the German fighter pilot Oblt. Emmerich Fluder. The aircraft then crashed in Echteld, killing all three crew members.
Two crew members were buried in Hoek van Holland. Because his body could not be identified, that of the third crew member, Sergeant Thomas, was buried in Zoelen as an unknown British airman. His upper body was found in the Linge in March 1941 and identified as Sergeant Thomas, who was buried in this cemetery.
Because the CWCG does not allow further investigation, the two body parts will never rest in one grave.
