On December 17, 1944 was the headquarters of the U.S. 7th Armored Division under the leadership of Hasbrouck located in Vielsam.

The division offered heavy resistance to the German advance in and around St. Vith.

On December 22, 20 thousand soldiers were withdrawn across the bridge at Vielsam, after which the bridges were blown up.

This monument commemorates the division, their commander and the 3500 soldiers who died in the vicinity.
