King's Bastion, originally the Green Bulwark, dates back to at least 1522 as part of Portsmouth’s early fortifications. Initially constructed from earth, it was later reinforced with masonry between 1541 and 1545. By 1589, it had evolved into a flanker-angled bastion. Its current form largely reflects modifications made in the late 17th century by engineer Sir Bernard de Gomme. The Bastion has been modified multple times since and is a Scheduled Monument since 1959.
During WW2, an emplacement (possibly for a searchlight) and a brick shielding wall were built on top of the Bastion.
