Fauld Crater and Memorial

On 27 November 1944, the largest non-nuclear explosion of World War I and World War II occurred, when 3,500-4,000 tons of munitions stored in old gypsum mines exploded.

70 people died in the explosion. Of them, 18 people are never recovered and are still buried here. The crated is about 100 metres deep and has a diameter of about 400 metres. There is also a memorial commemorates the victims.
