Belfort Sluis

A belfry is a four-sided tower building,
normally associated with a city or town
Market Hall. On top were the bells of the city
and from the 14th century on there was often a clock in the tower.
In the tower guards watched over the town,
downstairs the magistrate sat and administered justice
The belfry is characteristic of Flanders.
The belfry of Sluis (14th century) is the
only belfry in the Netherlands. In October 1944 it was
devastated due to the violence of war: restored in
1962. The tower is the picture of Jantje
of Sluis, the saviour of his town.
