Porta Nigra

This Roman building was the north city gate of Augusta Treverorum (today: Trier). Since 1986, it stands on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The building survived the American air raids on Trier in 1944, but was used by the German defenders as stronghold during the fighting for the city in 1945. Today, bullet impacts can be found on the walls.
