Partisan Bunker Zebrene

This bunker was part of a series of bunkers from nationalist Latvian partisans who fought for a democratic Latvia against the Germans and the Soviets.

The largest bunker in the Baltic States, built in 1948, served as a secret winter refuge for Latvian and Lithuanian partisans fighting Soviet forces. Destroyed in a brutal battle on March 17, 1949, it saw 15 partisans killed and nine captured, later deported to Siberia.

Restored in 2009 and reinforced with concrete in 2013 for safety, the bunker preserves its historical significance. Today, a White Cross and memorial signs honor those who fell, with annual commemorations held on March 17.
