The cemetery was established in October 1914 when the Indian Corps arrived in France. It remained in use until November 1915. Later, the dead of other units were also buried there.
Meerut Military Cemetery contains 339 Commonwealth war graves from World War I including 312 Indians and 25 Egyptian and two unidentified burials.
Most of the Egyptian workers of the Egyptian Labour Corps buried here were killed during an air raid over Boulogne on the night of the 4–5th September 1917.
The cemetery contains a Stone of Remembrance, but no Cross of Sacrifice. Instead, there is an obelisk monument bearing the names of the 32 officers and men of the Indian Army who were cremated here in 1915.
