Uckermark Extermination Camp

The Uckermark concentration camp was opened in May 1942 next to the infamous KZ Ravensbrück. Uckerman was what the Germans called a Mädchen-Internierungslager (internment camp for girls).

Uckerman held 2 functions in de period 1942-1945:
May 1942 - December 1944: Internment camp.
January 1945 - March 1945: Extermination camp.

The girls in this camp were all between 16 and 21 years old. Girls that reached the upper age limit were transferred to KZ Ravensbrück. In December 1944, the internment camp for girls was closed. In January 1945, it was reopened as extermination camp, where in de period of January and March, approximately 5.000 woman and children were killed. The camp was liberated by the Red Army in the night of April 29-30, 1945. Only 500 persons survived Uckermark.

Today there are only several monuments which commemorate this history.
