Memorial of the Grey Buses

During the 'Aktion T4' euthanasia programme throughout Germany a number of identical grey buses were used to transport people from their institutions to one of six places where they were gassed. In this way more than 70,000 people were brought to their death.

The memorial (Denkmal der Grauen Busse) consists of two concrete buses, of equal size to the original buses. On the buses are the words of the question asked by one of the patients: "Wohin bringt Ihr uns (Where do you take us to)?".

One of the two concrete buses is permanently located at the former Weißenau sanatorium near Ravensburg, from where 619 people were transported.

The second bus is moved from time to time to different places in the country, there is no schedule when the bus is taken to another place. This may be after a few months or after some years, depending on the amount of donations received.
