The farthest German advance between the North Sea and the Swiss border was marked in the years 1922-1925 with 'demarcation poles' on the main points.
A demarcation pole, also called "front pole", is a memorial that shows approximate to where the German armies had advanced during the Great War (World War I). In France and Belgium, a total of 118 demarcation poles was placed. Ninety-four poles have survived the years: nineteen in Belgium and seventy-five in France.
In France the pole is called "Borne Vauthier".
The monuments were often sponsored.
This pole at Fort Pompelle was donated by the Mexican War Veterans Organization.
About 200 Mexicans fought in this sector.
